Ariz. Crews Find F-16 Wreckage, No Pilot

PARKER, Ariz. (AP) — Crews searched a rugged area of western Arizona on Saturday for the student pilot of an F-16 that crashed during a training exercise.
The single-engine fighter based at Luke Air Force Base went down Friday south of Alamo Lake, a remote area about 80 miles northwest of Phoenix, said Mary Jo May, a base spokeswoman. The cause was not known.
The wreckage was spotted late Friday in an area accessible only by helicopter and was confirmed as the F-16 early Saturday, May said.
Search teams found a parachute and some of the pilot’s gear about 150 feet from the impact crater Saturday, May said. However, an instructor pilot flying nearby when the F-16 went down didn’t see an open parachute.
The single-seat jet wasn’t carrying any weapons, May said.
The pilot, whose identity wasn’t released, was part of the 62nd Fighter Squadron, one of eight squadrons at the base located in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale. The base has about 185 F-16s.
There have been 17 other crashes of Luke-based F-16s since 1998. May said only one resulted in a fatality, killing a Singapore air force pilot during a training mission at an Air Force bombing range in southwest Arizona.
