'Hulk' Finds Box-Office Green and 'Happening' Surprises

took in an estimated $12 million.
Tracking had The Happening performing extremely poorly and bad reviews and what appears to be critical hatred for M. Night Shyamalan weren’t going to help. However, it appears tracking and critics don’t determine what interests the public as Night’s film may end up raking in $31.2 million this weekend, considerably more than most believed it would bring in. Mason himself declared in a headline on Thursday, “Happening Doomed to $18M-$23M!” Good to see the audiences are willing to give a film a chance even if most critics didn’t.
It actually appeared even Fox wasn’t giving the film a chance as I have been informed of at least two midnight screenings of The Happening were canceled (one in L.A. and another in Florida). Not sure if the theaters were closing them to provide more screenings of Hulk, but word out of Florida was that it was Fox’s call. Doesn’t make sense to me.
In other news it still looks like we won’t have a

Letter: Imagine, back and better than ever (May 15, 2008)

Just when you thought it was safe to start shopping in Biddeford again, “Imagine” is back bigger and better then ever. We have just secured a 3,000 square foot storefront at 148 Main Street in downtown Biddeford, right below Maiden Games.
The name of the store is Buried Treasures and we will continue to provide free and low cost furniture and household items to people in need. We have also expanded to bring in antiques and collectibles at our very low prices. Also new at Imagine is Biddeford’s first and only The Charlie Lachance Toy library where children can come in, and be able to check out different toys and games each week, to bring home with them.
The only requirement of the toy library is that you want to play with a new toy or game. Also new will be our musical instrument division where we will accept donations of used instruments and will work with the school department, if they have a child that can not afford a instrument they will be able to get one from us if we have it. Cost should not be a factor when talent is on the line. So make it a point to see our new place soon drop by and say hi while we are getting it ready to open. We would like to thank all of our supporters and friends.
A very special thanks to George Burke who pounded the pavement and a worked his fingers to the bone to find us a new place. It wasn’t easy but George is a miracle worker and was determined to find us a place. We can’t say thank you enough to you, and your hard work. Tom Sangillo and all the staff over at Twin City Gold you guys helped us through our bad times without you we could not have continued to run, its because of your support that we are still around, we are looking forward to your continued support. You guys truly do run a business that gives back to the community, I cant say it enough if you work or shop at Twin City Gold be proud you are helping hundreds of local people

Wary O'Neill not planning an Euro 2008 signings

O’Neill will be watching the finals in Austria and Germany in his role as a TV pundit for the BBC.
But the former Celtic boss is wary of signing players on the evidence of watching them in major tournaments.
O’Neill said: ‘I’m very cautious about signing players from the Euro Championships or from a World Cup because it’s a very different environment.
‘Having said that, I did it a few years ago at Celtic. I signed a lad called Joos Valgaeren who was playing for Belgium at the time and impressed me.
‘He came over and he was absolutely brilliant so I suppose the only experience I have of signing a player from a tournament worked to my advantage.
‘But it wouldn’t be something that I would be too keen to do. I think you need to see a wee bit more of a player before making a decision.
‘That said, there shouldn’t be too many players on show in the Euros that we don’t already know about.
‘Virtually all of them play in European leagues and we know all about them. It’s not like a World Cup where you might see players from Africa or Asia who you might not have been aware of before.’
Meanwhile, O’Neill is expected to hold talks in the next few days with midfielder Gareth Barry, who is a target for Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.
Barry has hinted he wants to move to Anfield to taste Champions League football but O’Neill is desperate to hold onto the England midfielder.

TZ Minus 13: With The 1st Pick Of The 2008 NBA Draft, The …

It’s May 20th and I’m sitting in New Jersey with representatives from each of the 14 lottery teams. From up close I can tell that Pat Riley has indeed had botox. Brandon Roy seems to be a really nice guy, and I chat Kevin McHale up about coming to Sacramento to work with Spencer Hawes and Shelden Williams on their low post games, though McHale gets confused, thinks that I am tryintg to trade him Hawes and Williams and responds by offering Al Jefferson, Al Roker and Al Yankovic.
We are all seated behind our podiums. Michael Heisley is spinning around and around in his chair and yelling “wheee!!!” Chris Mullin has been shooting wads of paper into a trash can and has made 37 in a row. Elgin Baylor has dozed off and is snoring lightly, his head resting peacefully on Donnie Walsh’s shoulder. Clay Bennett keeps trying to relocate his seat.
The ceremony begins. Golden State gets drawn first, followed by Portland. Indiana gets pulled next, meaning that we’ve jumped into the top three! The rest of the teams get pulled in order until we get to the Knicks, who have also jumped into the top three. Miami winds up with the 3rd pick…the Knicks get the 2nd pick…and we win the #1 pick!!!
Jim Gray asks me who I think we should take with the pick. While giggling like a school girl I manage to blurt out “Joe Kleine!” Then I compose myself and state, “Hey, I’ve done my part. Now it’s up to the Maloof’s, Geoff Petrie and the coaching staff to decide. I do like Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose , though.”
So the pick is ours! Who do you like, and why?

Local briefs for Tuesday, April 15, 2008

To help spread awareness, the Esperanza Youth & Family Center Inc. will host a news conference at 10:30 a.m. today at 1536 Seventh St.
The event is open to the public and will feature Ottis Sterling, a Riverside County prosecuting attorney, and Debbie Anderson, with the Riverside County victims rights division, as guest speakers. Information: 398-0711
COACHELLA VALLEY — The California Fair Political Practices Commission confirmed Monday that someone filed a complaint against 80th Assembly District Democratic candidate Manuel Perez, accusing him of failing to disclose who paid for campaign advertising.
The complaint was filed against the Coachella school board trustee on April 4.
“It’s obvious some people want to manipulate rules and don’t want to follow them,” said Greg Rodriguez, who filed the complaint. “I think everybody needs to be scrutinized by the rules.”
Rodriguez is a Greg Pettis supporter. Pettis, a Cathedral City councilman, is one of four Democratic contenders for the 80th Assembly District.
Perez says he’s complied with the law.
“It’s one thing or another,” he said. “We’ve got more important things to do like walk the streets and talk to voters.”
The commission will notify Rodriguez within 14 days about whether the department will investigate, said department spokesman Roman Porter.
The California code requires disclosure on campaign advertising and stipulates the language and font size candidates should use.
The other Democrats who will face off in the Democratic primary in June are Ricardo Gonzales, former Vice President Al Gore’s deputy director of legislative affairs, and Richard Gutierrez, a Calexico dentist. Former Palm Springs Police Chief Gary Jeandron is running unopposed in the Republican primary.
The seat is open because Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia, R-Cathedral City, is ineligible for another term.
CATHEDRAL CITY — The Cathedral City Planning Commission will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 68-700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero.

Notre Dame guard awaits call from WNBA

Notre Dame’s Charel Allen will catch up on schoolwork today while keeping an eye on what’s going on in Tampa, Fla.
Allen has a chance to be drafted into the WNBA today despite not being one of 20 prospects invited to Tampa for the 2008 draft.
“I expect the worst,” Allen said last week. “If I get drafted, that’s great. That’s my mind-set. I always think for the worst.
“Then you won’t be upset if you don’t get drafted. I just think, like, OK, I’m not going to get drafted. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen. If it does, great, I’ll be so excited.”
Part of Allen’s feelings stem from the strength of her graduating class. Tennessee’s Candace Parker, LSU’s Sylvia Fowles and Stanford’s Candice Wiggins lead potentially the most talented class to enter the WNBA.
Allen is also accomplished. She is a two-time all-Big East first-team selection. The 5-foot-11 guard averaged 15.1 points and 5.6 rebounds her senior year and led Notre Dame to the Sweet 16 after a career-best 35 points in the second round against Oklahoma.
The question with Allen is whether she will be able to handle the more physical WNBA game.
“She has to prove to them she can take a physical beating, and I think she can,” Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. “She doesn’t look like she can, but she’s a lot tougher than she looks.”
It’s a toughness bred on the playgrounds of Monessen, Pa., and one that carried her through the Big East.
“Being that I was able to compete with the best players helped a lot,” Allen said.
Three different mock drafts on WNBADraft.net had Allen being selected. One projection had Allen as a first-round pick at No. 14 to New York. Another had her at No. 21 to San Antonio and a third picked her at No. 22 to Seattle.
