Struggling Mariners and Tigers to meet up
Two struggling American League teams will hook up this weekend when the Detroit Tigers play against the Seattle Mariners in a three-game series at Safeco Field.
The Mariners, who have the AL’s worst record at 20-34, can only hope for a better showing than they had last week at Detroit.
The Tigers, with the league’s third worst record at 22-31, swept all three games and outscored Seattle by a combined score of 30-14.
So in an attempt to change things around for the Mariners, Manager John McLaren — who recently received a vote of support from team management — will skip left-handed Jarrod Washburn’s turn in the pitching rotation to start three right-handers against Detroit.
That’s because the Tigers are an AL-worst 15-28 against right-handed pitching, and 7-3 against left-handers this season.
Seattle’s Carlos Silva, who has a 3-4 record with a 5.14 earned run average, is expected to start tonight against Detroit left-hander Nate Roberson, who has a 2-5 record and a 5.88 era.
The Detroit Pistons are listed as six-point favorites over the Boston Celtics for tonight’s Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
The Pistons, who trail, 3-2, in the best-of-seven series and need a victory to keep their season alive, are 7-3 against the point spread in their last 10 games as a home favorite of 3.5 to six points.
Boston will enter the game with a 5-1 record against the point spread in its last six games as a road underdog of 3.5 to six points, and the Celtics are 5-1 against the point spread in their last six games at Detroit.
But Boston is 1-7 against the point spread in its last eight road games overall and 2-8 against the point spread in its last 10 playoff games.
The over/under combined points total for tonight’s game is 176. The under is 4-0 in the Celtics’ last four road games and 4-1 in Detroit’s last five home games.

Two Tivos To Paradise 05.02.08: Where Every Week Is Sweeps!
Two Tivos To Paradise 05.02.08: Where Every Week Is Sweeps!
Is Lindsay Lohan joining the cast of Ugly Betty?, Tom Cruise chats with Oprah, more news on the new 90210, A & E’s new line up, the Daytime Emmy Award nominations, a defense of American Idol, raves for Lost, the latest in Neilsen ratings, tons of news and notes, the TV Pick of the Week, and more, all in this week’s Two Tivos To Paradise!
Hello Friends. Another crazy week on the home front; we closed on the condo on Wednesday and have done quite a bit of packing/throwing stuff away; nothing makes you feel more out of shape than going up and down a few flights of stairs carrying boxes. Not sure if I mentioned Richard Bradley’s The Greatest Game, a phenomenal book about the Yankees-Red Sox one game playoff in 1978. It’s a tribute to how well written it is that by halfway through I had forgotten how it ended and started to think the Sox had a chance.
Yesterday’s gone and now all I want is some news.
Now And Then I Get Insecure From All The Fame, I’m So Ashamed
TVGuide.com is reporting that not only is Lindsay Lohan in talks with ABC to appear in the May 22nd season finale of Ugly Betty but that they are discussing her character returning for as many as 8 episodes next fall. Lohan was rumored to be taking a role on the show late last year but that was derailed by the WGA strike. There has been no confirmation from either side but the website labeled the talks as “advanced.”
What hath Britney wrought? Clearly Ms. Spears effect on the ratings of How I Met Your Mother is playing some role in these negotiations but UB was interested in LiLo long before Brit hit the small screen, and the show has done a very good job with guest stars up to now. The truth is I have no idea how good an actress Lindsay is or isn’t but a role on a well run show where she won’t be required to do any heavy lifting makes a ton of sense for her. This story was breaking as TTTP was going to press so we’ll have more next week.

Contractor seeks SP nod for slaughterhouse ECC
The contractor of the new slaughterhouse in Brgy. Handumanan, Bacolod City is requesting the Sangguniang Panlungsod for a resolution endorsing the project to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for the issuance of an Environmental Compliance Certificate.
Joy Ignacio, authorized representative of the Bacolod City Slaughterhouse, made the request to Councilor Alex Paglumotan, chairman of the Committee on Markets, in her letter dated March 6, 2008.
Attached to her letter is a resolution unanimously approved by the Brgy. Handumanan Council endorsing the project to the DENR for the issuance of an ECC.
The memorandum of agreement for the completion and operation of the new slaughterhouse was entered into between Mayor Evelio Leonardia and Antonio Valeriano Bernardo in February 2007.
AVM Bernardo is investing P54 million for the rehabilitation of the facility which was constructed in 1999 through the office of former Bacolod Rep. John Orola.
The slaughterhouse, which was turned over to the city in 2003, has a project cost of P19.5 million.
The contractor will be operating the facility for 20 years under an operate and transfer scheme.
With the operation of the new slaughterhouse, the city is expected to earn P3.13 million in regulatory fees in the first year of operation aside from the rental payment of AVM Bernardo.
While at present, the city is losing P6.7 million a year in the operation of the existing facility in Brgy. 35 since the regulatory fees it is charging was set in 1974 yet and had never been updated.*CGS
