LIMA, Peru (AP) — European and Latin American leaders gathering for their fifth summit in a decade this week plan to tackle climate change, high food prices and poverty.
But they may get sidetracked by an issue not on the agenda: Colombia’s March 1 raid on a rebel camp inside Ecuador.
The meeting is set to begin Friday, the day after Interpol announces the results of an investigation into allegations that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa collaborated with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
Chavez, Correa and Colombian President Alvaro Uribe are all expected to attend the Lima-based summit of nearly 60 leaders and top officials from Latin America, Europe and the Caribbean.
Colombia says it found documents pointing to a connection between the two leftist presidents and the FARC on laptops belonging to FARC leader Raul Reyes, who was killed in the March 1 cross-border raid.
Both Chavez and Correa deny the claims. Correa even cast doubt on the authenticity of the computers, suggesting they may have been planted by the Colombians.
The raid prompted Correa to sever diplomatic relations with Uribe’s government. In a European tour this week, Correa said he would consider restoring ties only if Uribe halts “Colombia’s verbal aggression.”
“They already assaulted us with bombs,” he said. “Now they’re assaulting us with words.”
Ricardo Vega Llona, who organized this week’s event for the Peruvian government, said public displays of anger — such as when King Juan Carlos of Spain told Chavez to “shut up” at a Chilean summit six months ago — are unlikely this time around since the meeting’s working sessions will be private.

Hello Friends. Another crazy week on the home front; we closed on the condo on Wednesday and have done quite a bit of packing/throwing stuff away; nothing makes you feel more out of shape than going up and down a few flights of stairs carrying boxes. Not sure if I mentioned Richard Bradley’s The Greatest Game, a phenomenal book about the Yankees-Red Sox one game playoff in 1978. It’s a tribute to how well written it is that by halfway through I had forgotten how it ended and started to think the Sox had a chance.
Yesterday’s gone and now all I want is some news.
Now And Then I Get Insecure From All The Fame, I’m So Ashamed
TVGuide.com is reporting that not only is Lindsay Lohan in talks with ABC to appear in the May 22nd season finale of Ugly Betty but that they are discussing her character returning for as many as 8 episodes next fall. Lohan was rumored to be taking a role on the show late last year but that was derailed by the WGA strike. There has been no confirmation from either side but the website labeled the talks as “advanced.”
What hath Britney wrought? Clearly Ms. Spears effect on the ratings of How I Met Your Mother is playing some role in these negotiations but UB was interested in LiLo long before Brit hit the small screen, and the show has done a very good job with guest stars up to now. The truth is I have no idea how good an actress Lindsay is or isn’t but a role on a well run show where she won’t be required to do any heavy lifting makes a ton of sense for her. This story was breaking as TTTP was going to press so we’ll have more next week.

That’s probably the first — and last — time you will ever hear a singing performance on TV likened to a hamburger. But then, it was Simon Cowell doing the comparing, and the man is nothing if not creative when it comes to milking mic time for memorable sound bites.
It was Brooke White, and her solo piano act, on Mariah Carey’s Hero that drew the unfortunate food comparison. Cowell’s point — and he did have one — was that her performance was a little like getting the hamburger bun, but with nothing inside. No beef, no mustard — and not much relish from the judges, it would appear, except for Paula Abdul’s broken-needle routine, “You are who you are, and that’s what I love about you.”
By the time the last high note was sung on Mariah Carey night, there were some genuine surprises — for one, it was a night for the guys, not the gals, despite Carey’s gal-centric songlist — and some  of the same old same-old: Strong performances from the two Davids, and can-we-please-stop-this-nonsense-and-end-it-now performances from White and — again — Kristy Lee Cook.
That said, it will likely be Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson who again land in the bottom two, in part because they’ve been there so often, and in part because they have truly beautiful voices, and vocal ability — David Cook and David Archuleta aside — don’t seem to carry much weight with the viewers who’ve been doing the voting this time around.
I suppose we could always be in for another shock. David Cook, now the elder statesman in the group at age 25, may yet prove to be this year’s Chris Daughtry —  i.e. the talented rocker who goes home before his time but goes on to have a credible singing career — but the odds of two shocks in a row seem slim, even in this year’s American Idol.

RWE to Sell 36 Percent of American Water, Take Charge (Update2)

April 23 (Bloomberg) — RWE AG, Germany's second-largest utility, said it will sell 36 percent of its U.S. unit, American Water Works Co., resulting in a maximum 600 million euro ($958 million) charge that will cause 2008 profit to be slightly below last year's level.
The utility will sell 58 million shares at $21.50 each to raise $1.2 billion, the company said in a statement on DBF newswire today. Trading will start April 23 on the New York stock exchange. For 2008, the company previously forecast profit growth of more than 10 percent.
Chief Executive Officer Juergen Grossmann said April 17 that RWE wanted to hold an initial public offering this month, in which a 40 percent stake in the U.S. unit would be sold. RWE will be able to make higher dividend payouts next year once it sells a majority of its American Water shares, he said at the time. In 2006, the company completed a 4.8 billion pound ($9.6 billion) sale of unit Thames Water to a group led by Macquarie Group Ltd. to focus on providing electricity and natural gas.
“The climate on the stock exchange for a defensive business model like that of American Water has improved somewhat,'' Grossmann said. “Providing capital market conditions stay favorable, we are committed to divesting the majority of our share in American water within the current year.''
RWE has granted the underwriters a 30-day option to purchase up to 8.7 million additional shares of common stock, American Water said in its own statement today. RWE spokeswoman Julia Scharlemann had said April 17 that the underwriting banks may buy as many as 9.6 million additional shares from RWE.
The U.S. division would offer 64 million common shares at a range of $24 to $26 each, according to a preliminary prospectus filed March 31 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The April 22 broadcast of the FOX singing competition “American Idol” offered the show’s final six contestants the chance to perform songs by Tony and Olivier Award-winning composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
The songs performed included “Think of Me” (sung by David Archuleta), “Memory” (Jason Castro), “One Rock & Roll Too Many” (Syesha Mercado), “Jesus Christ Superstar” (Carly Smithson), “You Must Love Me” (Brooke White) and “The Music of the Night,” the Phantom of the Opera anthem, which was sung by David Cook.
Howard McGillin, the Broadway actor who currently plays the title role in Lloyd Webber’s Phantom at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre, spoke with TV’s “Extra” about Cook’s rendition of “Music of the Night.” Said McGillin, “He nailed it . . . It’s such a difficult song to sing . . . He sings with such purity and such a beautiful sound, but he did great.” McGillin also told the TV program, “I love [’American Idol’ but] I don’t get to watch it much.”
The April 23 “Idol” results show will feature Lloyd Webber performing live with the contestants. The results show airs at 9 PM ET; check local listings.
Howard McGillin holds the record for the longest-running Phantom in the show’s history. A Tony Award nominee for his performances in Anything Goes and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, McGillin has also appeared on Broadway in Kiss of the Spider Woman, She Loves Me, The Secret Garden and Sunday in the Park with George. On the London stage he starred in Mack and Mabel, and his solo recording is titled “Howard McGillin: Where Time Stands Still.” McGillin also starred in the Chicago and D.C. productions of Sondheim and John Weidman’s Bounce.

LOS ANGELES — Mariah Carey made her way to the CBS lot on Wednesday afternoon as the guest mentor on “American Idol.” But true to her word, our girl lived up to that diva-like rep.
Donning a (typical) tight-fitting outfit, Mariah worked the press area backstage — but it took a little longer than expected. Tech and camera guys apparently were made to put in the extra effort putting up lights and having them angled perfectly, with Carey’s people “double checking” that she was positioned perfectly at all times.
“We had to reshoot one of the questions,” one cameraman told Tarts. “I had to change the lighting and alter the position and do it again because we went off angle slightly. She has a director of photography with her at all times and can only be shot from the waist up.”
Well, when you are a multi-million-dollar music mogul, you do have a little authority in demanding your best angle, right?
However, Maz did lose quite a few fans on Thursday night when she decided to turn up two hours late to an album signing at Universal City.
“She strolled in with sunglasses on when it was nighttime and by that point a lot of people got fed up and had left,” a photographer told Tarts. “It was ridiculous.”
That said, our Maz is back with Billboard chart-topping album “E=MC2″ and looking better than ever — and fellow music veteran Janet Jackson is in full support.
“I never gave up on Mariah, but a lot of people were ready to write her off and gave up on her,” Jackson recently told Tarts. “Downs happen to a lot of people even in regular jobs, so it’s just a part of life. You can’t stay up, up, up forever.”

American Idol judge Randy Jackson tells Us Weekly that producers have been trying to get Mariah Carey on the hit Fox show for the past couple of seasons.
Their time has come.
Carey, 38 — whose new disc E=MC2 drops today — pops by the show tonight to mentor the seven remaining contestants.
"She’s going to bring a wealth of knowledge about singing to these kids," says Jackson of the newly svelte singer, who will also perform. "It’s amazing for us to have her on.
"She’s kind of what the show’s about — she’s that girl who grew up in New York, who struggled to become that singer."
Now, Jackson says, "she’s won the Holy Grail. She sold 175 million albums! I don’t know if anyone will ever get to that point ever again because the music business is in such disarray."
On tonight’s show, contestants will perform songs from Carey’s extensive catalogue.
So will David Cook belt out "Vision of Love?"
"You never know!" Jackson tells Us. "Just because you’re a rocker or a country singer doesn’t mean you can’t sing these songs - you adapt them to what you do best."
Adds Jackson, "I’m sure these kids will have a good time."

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is heading to Washington on April 23.
Abbas says he will meet with U.S. President George W. Bush in the American capital on that date. Last week, the White House disclosed it had invited Abbas to try to give Mideast peace talks a boost, but no firm
date was given. On Wednesday in Cairo, Abbas announced the date.
The invitation followed U.S. Secretary of State’s Condoleezza Rice’s visit to the region this week, meant to propel efforts to reach an Israeli-Palestinian peace accord by the end of the year.
Peace talks were officially renewed in November at a U.S.-hosted conference in Annapolis, Maryland, but have been troubled since by violence in the Gaza Strip and contested Israeli construction projects.
