Today in History
Today is Friday, June 6th, the 158th day of 2008. There are 208 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History: On June 6th, 1944, the “D-Day” invasion of Europe took place during World War II as Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France.
On this date: In 1799, American politician and orator Patrick Henry died at Red Hill Plantation, Virginia.
In 1844, the Young Men’s Christian Association was founded in London.
In 1918, American Marines suffered heavy casualties as they launched their eventually successful counteroffensive against German troops in the World War I Battle of Belleau Wood in France.
In 1925, Walter Percy Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corporation.
In 1933, the first drive-in movie theater was opened by Richard Hollingshead in Camden County, New Jersey. (The movie shown was “Wives Beware,” an Adolphe Menjou comedy previously released under the title “Two White Arms.”) In 1934, the Securities and Exchange Commission was established.
In 1966, black activist James Meredith was shot and wounded as he walked along a Mississippi highway to encourage black voter registration.
In 1968, Senator Robert F. Kennedy died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, a day after he was shot by Sirhan Bishara Sirhan.
In 1978, California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 13, a primary ballot initiative calling for major cuts in property taxes.
In 1982, Israeli forces invaded Lebanon to drive Palestine Liberation Organization fighters out of the country. (The Israelis withdrew in June 1985.)
Ten years ago: The U.N. Security Council demanded in a unanimous vote that India and Pakistan refrain from further nuclear tests and sign nuclear control agreements. Real Quiet was denied horse racing’s Triple Crown as Victory Gallop won the Belmont Stakes by a nose.

Smokin' Hot!
The Daytona 500 provided yet another thrilling event as Ryan Newman took the checkered flag in front of Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart at the finish line on February 17. Known as “The Great American Race” and the “Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing,” the Daytona 500 attracts a huge global TV audience. What many are referring to as a “push from heaven” concerns Newman, who pulled away for his first win since New Hampshire in September 2005. Everyone noticed the perfect pair of living legends Bobby Allison and Cale Yarborough sitting next to each other for NASCAR’s celebration of the fiftieth running of the Daytona 500.
Speaking of cars, who are the new owners of the brand-new ‘08 model of the Lamborghini Reventon? Get this, the production is limited to 20, and the sticker price is $1.4 million. No, this is not a typo. These beauties are already spoken for, and if you’re lucky to see them on the road they are smokin’ hot. The inside dashboard is digital, including the G-Force Meter, which displays the dynamic forces. Some people say it reminds them of an F-22 Raptor or F1 car. The 1.4 million Reventon comes with a three-year-warranty. In case you did not know, the company names its vehicles after fighting bulls; Reventon killed Felix Guzman (a famous bullfighter) in 1943. I wonder if Tom Cruise could top this. Just a few weeks ago, he purchased a $72,000 super bike.
What is going on with “American Idol”? The attention is focused on Carly Smithson, an Irish-born singer who once had a record deal with MCA in 2001. The record company reportedly spent a whopping $2 million trying to promote her debut album. The CD, incidentally, was titled “Ultimate High”; however, it sold less than 400 copies in its first three months here in the U.S. But there is more: the Web site-VoteForTheWorst.com - is reporting that Carly was signed to MCA records during the same time frame that Randy Jackson was the senior vice president of A&R. “If it isn’t against the rules, that’s some shady, shady stuff going on,” the Web site wrote a few weeks ago. “This plant definitely made it to the top 24-based on a prior connection with Randy, which should be completely unfair.”
