Memories of our fathers

As the time for Father’s Day draws closer with reminders from commercials on television and gift promotions in all the stores, we find in our quiet times of reflection those special memories of our fathers and grandfathers.
As I thought about what my favorite memory of my own father would be, I slowly realized that the reason why I chose to drop my maiden name and retain my middle name from birth and why I insist on adding that “E” to my signature was from a very special summer day in my youth. My father had driven me to the Aliquippa Harbor one summer morning to show me his new lobster boat, and as I stood on the rocks admiring the boat in my favorite colors, white and green, I read the side and realized that he had named it after me, the “Jana E.” He had a hard time expressing emotions, alcoholics often do, but in that moment he was able to show me that he loved me, and I’m forever thankful.
We all have special memories of our family; and I thought I’d share the favorite memories of some friends, with the sincere hope that readers take time this weekend to share their own favorite memories with their families…it’s those tales from our hearts that weave the fabric of our families and keep our history alive.
“Well, my grandpa and I used to ride around in this old red 1990 Corolla and pretend it was the Batmobile. It was pretty fun; he would tell me about his time in the Navy, the Communists and how they almost ruined the world, and the Capitalists and how they were ruining the world. He told me about the good old days, and he used to sing “You Are My Sunshine”; it still makes me realize there are still things worth living for.”- Garion Z. White, 2008 graduate of Mayo HS, attending the Citadel in the fall.

The 50 defining moments of 2007-08

50. Roy Keane rant, August 15
Who is this softly spoken Irishman, and what has he done with Roy Keane? That was what we wondered last season, as Sunderland were promoted and the red mist stubbornly refused to descend on football’s Mr Angry. Happily, the season was just one game young when the Keane of old returned with an entertaining rant about WAG culture causing him to miss out on transfer targets: “These so-called big stars are people we are supposed to be looking up to. Well, they are weak and soft. If they don’t want to come because their wife wants to go shopping in London, it’s a sad state of affairs”. He ended the season with a nicely volcanic tirade, as well, threatening to sack half his squad for not trying at Bolton Wanderers because they’d secured survival the week before.
49. Spurs chat with Juande Ramos, August 17
What are the chances? Spurs representatives visit Seville, probably for a meeting regarding a new variety for the team’s half-time oranges, and who should be at their hotel but Ramos, the Seville manager and one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe. Thus did speculation about the future of Martin Jol, the most successful Spurs boss in recent times, begin – and it was only mid-August. That’s what losing to Sunderland will do for you.
48. Antonio Puerta dies, August 28
We look to sport as an escape from reality and a celebration of youth and energy - so, the death in August of Antonio Puerta, the 22-year-old Seville defender, was especially shocking. Puerta, whose partner was heavily pregnant, died several days after suffering a heart attack during a match. This tragedy instigated a debate in British football as to whether the fast pace of the modern game was dangerous. More players died during the season, including Motherwell’s Phil O’Donnell. Clive Clarke, of Leicester City, suffered heart failure during a Carling Cup tie just a couple of days after Puerta’s collapse but survived.

Take your dog to work day

According to the Web site, the day “was created to celebrate the great companions dogs make and to encourage their adoption from humane societies, animal shelters and breed rescue clubs.”
Since that’s exactly where I adopted all three of my pooches, I agree they would all be excellent ambassadors and if my co-workers saw what great dogs they are, they would run out and adopt a sweetie of their own.
I have had all three of my dogs in my office at one time or another for very brief visits, but I doubt even my most persuasive argument would convince my boss to let me bring just one of my pooches to work for a whole day. The point is moot anyway: I am out of the office next Friday for a weekend in Nashville.
But in case you would like to give it a go at your workplace, here’s a Letterman-style top ten list of reasons the Web site suggests you use to convince your boss to let you participate:
10. The squirrels in the neighborhood deserve a break.
9. Wagging tails work great when the a/c is on the fritz.
8. With a dog as your passenger, you’ll be able to use the car pool lane.
7. It’s a great way to lick the work day blahs!
6. My dog thinks you’re grrrrrrreat!
5. Meetings end as soon as Rover starts staring at the conference room door.
4. You can blame those missing reports on one of your employees’ dogs.
3. It’s the leash you can do.
2. Finally, someone at your office will actually be working like a dog.
AND THE NUMBER ONE REASON TO TAKE YOUR DOG TO WORK…
1. Friday, June 20, is Take Your Dog To Work Day®!
Good luck and post a comment if you plan to participate or if you have experience with taking your dog to work.

Tribute day to binman

The funeral of a binman killed after being crushed under the wheels of a dustcart driven by his best friend takes place on Tuesday.
Jason Maguire was working as part of a team of three in Andrews Road in Southwater, near Horsham, when the accident happened last Thursday.
Horsham District Council has suspended all refuse and recycling operations on the day of the funeral to allow Mr Maguire’s work colleagues to attend.
Collections are already scheduled to take place a day late because of the bank holiday on Monday and this decision will delay collections by a further day.
Refuse and recycling crews will work additional overtime over the next two weeks to help bring collections back to normal and they will collect an additional bag of waste if left beside the bin.
Council head of environmental management waste and cleansing Ian Jopling said: “Jason was a popular figure at the depot and many of his work colleagues wish to attend his funeral.
“In order to allow as many as possible to attend and as mark of respect to Jason, we have decided to suspend operations on that day.
“We will be working additional overtime to catch up and ask all residents to put their bins and baskets out on the advertised day and we will collect them as soon as we can.
“I am sure the public will understand why this difficult decision has been made and join us in remembering Jason on Tuesday.”
Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, Robert Nye, said: “I would like to add my sincere condolences to Jason’s family, friends and colleagues.

Op-Ed: 'Memorial Day at 'South Pacific''

Younger than Springtime: William Tabbert and Betta St. John played Marine Lt. Joseph Cable and his islander sweetheart Liat in the 1949 production; below, Matthew Morrison and Li Jun Li take on those parts in the Lincoln Center revival. Courtesy the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization
All Things Considered, April 3, 2008 · One of the most popular musicals of all time — Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific — gets its very first Broadway revival tonight. It’s been close to 60 years since the show opened, but the cast and creative team of the new production say they find South Pacific as resonant as ever.
And that’s a tall order: When South Pacific opened on April 7, 1949, its World War II story and setting had a torn-from-the- headlines feeling.
“Every single person that night in April knew someone who had been in World War II,” says musical-theater historian Larry Maslon. “Every second person must’ve known someone who was in the South Pacific in World War II — and I would imagine at least every fourth person knew someone who died in World War II. And that’s very potent, I think, for an audience.”
Of course South Pacific had more than topicality going for it. Inside a candy wrapper of romance, comedy and exoticism, the creators — composer Richard Rodgers, lyricist and co-author Oscar Hammerstein and director and co-author Joshua Logan — presented a story that questioned core American values, with an emphasis on issues of race and power.
“I was always moved by this group of American artists in the ’40s encountering this first major experience of American military power overseas and what it did to people,” says director Bartlett Sher, who’s in charge of the new Lincoln Center revival. “You know, what happens when somebody from Philadelphia and somebody from Arkansas get dropped into this new world, and they have to question everything about who they are and everything about who they think they were and what they believe.”

New York gallery owner arrested for serving drinks

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — Wine, cheese — and police?
An East Hampton art gallery owner was led away in handcuffs Saturday after she refused to stop serving drinks at an opening bash for a celebrity photo exhibit. As about 200 startled guests looked on, Ruth Kalb — generally known as Ruth Vered, after her gallery’s name — was arrested on a charge of selling alcohol without a liquor license.
“I told them I’ve been doing this since before they were born,” said Vered, 67, whose gallery has been a fixture of the Hamptons art scene for more than 30 years. “They have some nerve.”
She said the wine and Champagne were free.
Mayor Paul Rickenbach said police were just doing their job.
“It’s not something that’s new and out of the blue at all,” he said.
Vered was throwing the party — during the traditional Memorial Day weekend start of the resort’s summer season — to celebrate an exhibit of photographs of Madonna, Justin Timberlake, Angelina Jolie and other stars.
Vered is due to be arraigned June 25 in East Hampton Town Court.

WWE Judgement Day Preview

Judgment Day is coming. Sure, you’ve been hearing that from crazy people street corners for years, but I can absolutely, positively guarantee you that Judgment Day arrives on Sunday. Granted, it will be WWE Judgment Day and not the biblical version, but the fallout could be just as monumental. Well, not really, but it’s still a big show.
Triple H defends the WWE Title against Randy Orton inside a steel cage: Triple H pinned Orton in the main event of last month’s pay-per-view to kick off what feels like his 500th title reign (it’s actually No. 12, but who’s counting?). He had Orton locked in crossface finishing hold when the self-proclaimed “most powerful entity in WWE” William Regal stopped their match the next night by having the production truck cut the tv feed. This past Monday night, Hunter beat up Orton to close out the show.
These things usually work better when the fans are given a reason to think there’s at least a small chance that the champion could actually lose, but I digress. Orton wants to reduce his schedule this summer because his wife is expecting a little Legend Killer. As such, there’s really no reason to think that Hunter is going to drop the strap this early in his run.
Undertaker will face Edge for the vacant World Hvt. Championship: The Dead Man beat Edge to regain the Smackdown version of the World Title at WrestleMania 24. He successfully defended it against The Rated R Superstar last month at Backlash. Taking all that into account, you might think Taker is a lock to regain the title that Smackdown general manager Vickie Guerrero stripped him of last month. That just seems to obvious, though. There has to be some reason the company took the title away from Taker, right? My guess is that this is their way of putting the belt back on Edge without actually having Undertaker lose. In other words, I smell a cheap DQ finish.
