Softball splits with KWC

The Saint Joseph’s College softball team rebounded from an extra-inning loss to salvage a split in its Great Lakes Valley Conference double header against Kentucky Wesleyan College on Wednesday, shaking off a 4-3, nine-inning defeat to post an 8-4 victory in the second game of the day.
The Pumas (12-17, 4-6 GLVC) fell behind, at the outset of the first game, and trailed until an RBI single by Theresa Weinzerl (Fr., Indianapolis, IN/Scecina Memorial) knotted the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning. SJC took the lead in the fifth on a two-run single by Jessie Privett (Sr., Fortville, IN/Mt. Vernon).
With two outs in the seventh inning, KWC (10-22, 4-10) managed to tie the score, 3-3, with a pair of unearned runs. The Panthers posted what turned out to be the winning run with one out in the ninth.
Privett went 3 for 4 with a double in the game, and her two runs batted in pushed her career total to an SJC record of 89. She also pitched all nine innings, allowing two earned runs. She struck out five and walked two, dropping to 4-5 on the season with the loss.
SJC allowed for no such drama in the second game, taking advantage of three Panther errors to score five runs in the second inning. Stephanie Kickels (Jr., Lemont, IL) brought a run across the plate with a single and later scored on an error, as did Privett, Weinzerl, and Jasmine Moffitt (Fr., Carmel, IN/Heritage Christian).
After a three-run surge by KWC in the fifth, the Pumas tallied three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Privett, Ashley Reed (Sr., Kokomo, IN/Western) and Stephenie Hash (Fr., Brookston, IN/Frontier) each contributed RBI singles.
Kickels went 2 for 2 at the plate, while Privett was 2 for 3. Sara Somogyi (Jr., Chicago, IL/Resurrection) got the win (8-10), allowing three earned runs and five hits. She struck out 11 and walked two.
