Chillin' grows into major fashion event
At Mezzanine nightclub last weekend, Chris Gorog came dressed for success. Atop a shirt and jeans, he wore a leather holster slung over his left shoulder. Not to store a gun, but his modern-day weapons for battling the world: cell phone, business cards and iPod.
He wasn’t there for dancing, although the music thumped and drinks flowed.
The urban dandy and chief executive of Revel Industries was staffing a table displaying holsters, skinny neckties and other accessories alongside 60 other fashion designers and jewelrymakers, 100 painters and photographers, 40 filmmakers and eight DJs spinning at an event called Chillin’, an open house and trade show for local independent artists.
It had the vibe of club scene meets flea market, but the goods - ranging from T-shirts to feather earrings to fedoras with hatbands made of vintage neckties - were newly created by artisans who are hoping to have their wares picked up by boutiques and department stores, or at least to generate some buzz on the hipster scene so they could sell from their own Web sites.
“We developed these holsters because jeans are getting tighter and tighter,” said Gorog, a Stanford graduate who has been showing at the event for four years. “They’re practical.”
Perhaps even more practical is the event itself. Chillin’ is a periodic art and culture party organized by Irene Hernandez-Feiks to give independent artists exposure to the public and boost their fledgling businesses. No fee is charged to the artists to show their wares, though members of the public pay $7 to attend, and buy their own drinks at the bar.
This weekend’s show was particularly meaningful for Hernandez-Feiks because Chillin’ celebrated its 10th anniversary on May 10, placing it among the granddaddies in the world of local weekly and monthly themed parties. Sebastien Arseguel’s Indulgence, a weekly dance party at the Starlight Room, celebrated its 11th anniversary last year.Hernandez-Feiks wasn’t certain that Chillin’ would make it, not for lack of talented purveyors but because organizing such an event is a lot of work.

Rolen close to rejoining Jays
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — In a matter of days, the Blue Jays should finally have Scott Rolen in a Toronto uniform and manning third base. That was the plan when the Jays traded for Rolen in January, but one that went awry during an unfortunate mishap near the end of Spring Training.
Rolen is currently testing his recovering right middle finger in Minor League games with Class A Dunedin, but is due to be activated from the 15-day disabled list in the coming week. On Tuesday, Toronto manager John Gibbons indicated that Rolen could rejoin the Jays before the end of the club’s current 10-day road trip.
“If all goes well,” said Gibbons, sitting inside the visiting manager’s office at Disney’s Wide World of Sports. “As a matter of fact, that’s what we’re hoping.”
In a best-case scenario, that means Rolen might be ready in time to join the Blue Jays on the road in Kansas City, where the Royals are hosting Toronto in a three-game set this weekend, beginning Friday. Otherwise, Rolen could be on hand in Boston for Toronto’s series on April 29-May 1.
The hope is that Rolen will not only strengthen Toronto’s already-impressive defense, but he will provide a boost to an offense that has labored in the season’s early goings. Rolen’s bat becomes even more important in the wake of the Blue Jays releasing veteran slugger Frank Thomas on Sunday.
“It’s not even that,” said Gibbons, when asked how much Rolen could aid the lineup. “It’s just having him around. He’s a guy we brought here for a reason, and we haven’t had him. The guy is a winner and he’s a big part of this.
“You get an emotional lift, but you can’t expect Scotty to carry the team. They’ve all got to do it.”
