Archbishop Cruz posts bail
Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz posted bail on Wednesday after an arrest warrant was issued on the libel case filed against him by employees of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).
Cruz paid the P10,000 bail set by the Judge Antonio Rosales of the Manila Regional Trial Court branch 52 for his temporary liberty.
“Na-fingerprint ako saka mayroon akong mugshot. Ang wala na lang iyong number,” Cruz said.
Cruz admitted he was worried because this is the first time a criminal case has been filed against him.
“Makulong oo pagkat galit ako noon pagkat alam kong hindi naman iyong mga women ang nagkaso sa akin e. Alam ko ang nagkaso sa akin ay iyong PAGCOR.
The archbishop believed that he should not be the center of a social disturbance.
The 20 complainants-17 from PAGCOR and three from the Office of the First Gentleman–used Cruz’s newspaper statements published in June 28, 2004 as the basis for lodging the complaint against the bishop.
The 17 complainants from PAGCOR are Sharleen Tecson, Daylyn Cabianan, Michelle Masbate, Kristine Joy Morales, Agnes de Guzman, Lorica Canto, Ma. Consuelo Violeta, Rizza Panganiban, Maylene Mandariaga, Elizabeth Berme, Cherry Ann Ilano, Ma. Bianca Gonzales, Joy Anne Gustilo, Ana Mirabilla Rosales, Ritzel Aday, Ma. Daisy Rivera and Mylynn Manabat.
They are employed as corporation events promotion tourism specialist, administrative supervisor, marketing associate, advertising sales coordinator, and assistant branch marketing manager, marketing associate, receptionists and clerks.
The three other complainants from the Office of the First Gentleman are Leah Salvador, Cecille Bermas and Mielin Medalla.
Court records disclosed that the 20 complainants volunteered to serve as usherettes during the party. They assisted the guests whom they said were mostly couples.
The group said they arrived at the party at 5 p.m., which contradicted Cruz’s allegation that they went there at midnight.

Cindy McCain Does 'Vogue'
Cindy McCain appears in the June issue of Vogue looking relaxed, beautiful and well, American. In images captured by famed photographer Norman Jean Roy, McCain’s wife is ditching her usual Stepford look in favor of a more relaxed, human look.
Robin Givhan called it earlier, when she wrote in an article about the aspiring first ladies, “McCain appears to be working to shatter a public image of the pretty — but starched — accessory.”
The wife of (one of the) Democratic hopefuls, Michelle Obama, also had a Vogue shoot last September, which produced images that had an opposite message to McCain’s.
Givhan commented: “Obama’s photos seemed crafted specifically to help the viewer imagine her in the role of first lady. She is a study in little black dresses, conservative pearls, preppy hair and restraint. Again, the implied message is unmistakable: I am neither subversive nor threatening. I am not some scary ‘other.’ I am Camelot with a tan.”
Who will be the next president of the United States? Bet on the Presidential Election at Bodog.

SOLANA BEACH – A retired veterinarian who was swimming with members of a triathlon club was killed Friday morning in a shark attack north of Fletcher Cove.
A marine expert said the wounds appeared to be from a great white shark, an attack he described as “practically unprecedented” in the area.
The victim, 66-year-old David Martin of Solana Beach, a member of the Triathlon Club of San Diego and a father of four, was attacked shortly after 7 a.m. as he was swimming about 150 yards offshore in water 20 to 30 feet deep, officials said.
Richard H. Rosenblatt, a professor emeritus of marine biology at Scripps Institution of Oceanography who examined Martin’s body, said he believed the shark was a great white between 12- and 17-feet-long.
Rosenblatt said witnesses reported that Martin “was thrust vertically up out of the water, and that sounds like what white sharks do when they attack a seal.”
