Post-season alphabet soup
Dan Issel holds the record for career points by a UK men’s basketball player. In a recent vote by members of the media, Issel ranked fourth among the top SEC men over the last 75 years. Staff file photo
After Auburn lost in Thursday’s first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament, Coach Jeff Lebo entered the brave new world of post-season play.
The Tigers (14-16) pondered how to answer should a call come from the new College Basketball Invitational. The CBI will compete with the NCAA-sponsored National Invitation Tournament for leftovers after the NCAA Tournament makes its picks.
Lebo noted a possible quandary: Play on the road at, say, South Alabama in the NIT? Or play a home game in the CBI? And then there’s SEC icon C.M. Newton, who heads the NIT.
When asked if Auburn would agree to play in the CBI, Lebo said, “Would we? Yes, we’d go. Why wouldn’t we?”
The CBI format is 16 teams with an interesting twist: the finals are a best two of three.
“Here’s my question,” Lebo said. “Say the teams are Washington and St. John’s in the finals. Are you going to cross the country (twice) in the finals?”
The Gainesville Sun also asked its panel to rate the SEC arenas as facilities. Here’s the results:

Powerball Sales are at a High
NEW HANOVER COUNTY — After a disappointing first year, lottery sales are better than projected for 2008, so far.
A $230 million Powerball jackpot is bringing people to the Han-Dee Hugo's on Shipyard Boulevard. People are scooping up Powerball tickets and taking a look at the other games being sold.
In its first year, the lottery made $100 million less than expected for education. This year, the lottery is close to $20 million ahead of projections.
Last week, the lottery broke its single week sales record.
The latest game, the $100 million Cash Spectacular, is a scratch off game that costs $10 a ticket.
Bigger prizes and better odds are keeping people on the North Carolina side of the lottery border war with South Carolina.
“We live in ocean isle, so we used to go back and forth between south and north Carolina, now we're doing north Carolina to support education and I have kids in school,” said James Coley a lottery customer.
The Powerball prize tonight is more than $230 million. Money like that brings people into the stores, but as clerks said, it also gets people to buy other games.

South Carolina coach heads into retirement after losing final game
ATLANTA (AP) - Dave Odom paused at the edge of the court, as though he wasn’t ready to leave.
But he knew it was time to go.
South Carolina nearly pulled off a monumental upset to extend Odom’s 22-year career as a college head coach, but Chris Lofton hit a 3-pointer with 11.4 seconds remaining to give No. 4 Tennessee an 89-87 victory in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference tournament.
The Gamecocks, routed twice by Tennessee during the regular season, clearly played with added urgency for their retiring coach. It wasn’t quite enough against the powerful Vols, who finished nine games ahead of South Carolina in the SEC East standings.
After the buzzer, Odom took his usual walk in front of the scoring table, shaking hands with the coaches and players from the opposing team. He then headed toward the locker room, walking slowly with his head down. He stopped at the edge of the court, politely letting a few Vols players walk in front of him, but also wanting to soak it all in one final time.
“I snuck a last look at all the people, all the players, all the jerseys,” Odom said. “I looked for my wife, but I couldn’t find her.”

South Jersey School Closings
There’s always a ripple effect with a move as significant as the closing of the Voorhees branch of the Camden County YMCA.
But for the swim team that calls the facility home, the ripples seem more like tidal waves.
“It’s just a sad state of affairs,” said Peter Holcroft, coach of the South Jersey Aquatic Club.
Holcroft has been scrambling to find pool time for his team, which includes about 140 members from ages 6-18.
Holcroft said Camden County YMCA officials have indicated they will keep the pool at the Voorhees facility open until Friday, but the coach has no guarantees after that.
Holcroft said he has contacted several area facilities in hopes of arranging pool time, but most are booked by other clubs as well as high school teams.
Holcroft said more times should open at places such as GCIT in Sewell when the high school season winds down in late February. But in the meantime, the South Jersey Aquatic Club team, which includes swimmers such as Eastern High School star Jacquie Ward, is trying to prepare for the “Y” state meet in March as well as the national meet in April.
“Our big hope is that they will keep this pool open,” Holcroft said. “These are great young people who are being affected by this. They work hard, they don’t do drugs, they compete in sports and now they are being told, “By the way, you have to try to find some other place to swim because of bad decisions that were made.’ “
In announcing that the Voorhees branch would be closed Sunday, YMCA officials on Thursday cited decreased donor support, declining membership and the economic downturn.
The move comes less than a year after the YMCA closed its Camden branch, a development that Holcroft said forced the South Jersey Aquatic Club to cut loose more than 100 members.
“We had 250 kids last year and now we’re at 140,” Holcroft said. “When they closed that Camden facility, we had to cut 100 kids. And that pool (in Camden) is just sitting there while they try to sell the building.
“This is one of the richest swim areas in the entire country, and we can’t find a place for these kids to swim. It’s just sad.”
